Tips on talking to judges and other legal people

Talking to someone new might feel a little weird, right? Here are some questions you could ask:

  • Why are you asking me questions?
  • What are you deciding?
  • How will my words help with the decision?
  • Who will you tell about what I say?
  • Can you keep what I say private?
  • Will you let me know what you decide and when?
If you're feeling a bit confused

If you're feeling a bit confused or upset about what is going on, it's a good idea to talk to your parents about it. If that feels tricky, you can chat with someone else you trust, like a teacher or another grown-up who can help. You're not alone, and it's okay to share your feelings!

It's okay to share your thoughts and wishes.

It's okay to share your thoughts and wishes. Your parents should listen to what you have to say, even if they can't do everything you want.

Wait until your parents are calm and not arguing to share your thoughts.

If it is hard to say what you mean, try writing a letter to your parents instead.

If your parents are arguing

It can be tough if your parents are arguing. Remember, it's not your job to fix things. Try doing something that makes you happy, like listening to music, instead of their argument.

Feel like you need to pick between your parents?

Remember you have the right to love both your parents even if they don’t love each other anymore. Ask them to help you stay in contact with your other parent, family member, or friend you miss.
